Introduction
The Daguangming Canal system, which traces its origins to the Japanese colonial period, was excavated along Dahutong Mountain. Construction began in 1945 and was completed on June 12, 1948. During the early post-war period, Taiwan faced severe shortages of essential materials like steel and cement, and construction machinery was unavailable. The project relied entirely on manual labor. While the tunnels were built using concrete, reinforced concrete was only used for open channels and inverted siphon structures. Despite these harsh conditions, the craftsmanship was remarkable, standing up to modern engineering standards even today.
