According to Article 12 of the Irrigation Act
Irrigation facilities shall not be concurrently used for other purposes. However, in cases where there is no obstruction to the original functions or maintenance of the facilities, an applicant may, with an attached plan, apply to the Competent Authority for authorization to concurrently use such facilities for other purposes.
According to Article 9 of the Regulations for Management of Farmland Irrigation and Drainage Facilities, the following types of concurrent uses are permitted:
- Construction of bridges and culverts
- Construction of crossings
- Buried facilities
- Overhead cables (pipelines)
- Water sharing
- Other uses permitted by the competent authority or in line with major government policies
The most common types of facilities used by farmers include farmhouse (machinery) slab bridges, attached water pipelines, and buried sewage pipes. For farmhouse slab bridges, each farmer is entitled to a one-time exemption from usage fees for an area of up to 36m². Other agricultural facilities, such as greenhouses, or commercial uses like bed and breakfasts, are excluded from this exemption.
